The Artist

Noryne Taylor started Decorous Studio in 2004.
Jewelry designer with attitude. I'm Noryne Taylor of Decorous Studio. I love working with the precious metals and gemstones that our planet provides. As I cast, form and polish metal, I feel I am only taking part in a larger creative process that began with the earth itself. Jewelry making allows me to explore ideas of beauty and the relationships we have between concepts of who we are and the outward expressions that we choose.

At Decorous each piece of jewelry begins life as a personal project, something created out of a sense of curiosity and fun. Inspiration. Expansion. An exploration of a theme. Either consciously or unconsciously it grows out of a thematic seed and is underlined with the fundamental quest to understand one's experiences. I hope to communicate something of myself with you through my jewelry. Understand the designs as you will. They will speak to you if they are meant to. Let them say what they want. Jewelry is fun. Life is fun. And all I want to do is have fun, feel free and turn up the music real loud. I hope you understand. I do the best work I can and am committed to my company, my jewelry and the happiness of my customers.

This journey began for me at the local visual arts center, the Hui No'eau in Makawao, Maui. There I met J.B. Rea, head of the jewelry department, a highly respected master silversmith and also the most dedicated teacher I had ever encountered. Under his tutelage I discovered a craft that allowed me the expressive freedom I'd been looking for.

Evening classes turned into day classes and then weeks-long workshops and an apprenticeship. Jewelry had become an all-encompassing passion. Today, my jewelry finds its way into the lives of a wide range of clientele. The famous, non-famous and those just wanting something cool come to visit. And the designs will always continue to evolve, just as I do.
